About Us
you can do something to help shape the kind of world in which future generations will live!
"Why has so little been done to combat the causes of Global Warming? Simply put, those most affected have yet to be born."
We believe that real changes in attitude and behavior will come not from politics, but from individuals, organizations, and businesses , making a MORAL DECISION about the future of the globe and taking action!!!
Our goal is to make Smart About Carbon be THE PLACE
you come to learn about Global Warming
and Offset some or all of your Carbon Footprint.

Annika Hayes, born in Sweden and educated in the sciences, has always had a strong dedication to the Earth and its resources: be they human, cultural or environmental.
She has been active in the travel industry in Europe as well as in the USA since 1972. In Europe, she held positions ranging from supervising operations for a large charter operator to international sales/marketing manager for a foreign national tourist office, which gave Annika the opportunity to pursue her interests.
Her career in the USA spans 30 years, and has been focused on special interest groups, incentives and niches like health, wellness, educational and Eco focused group programs.
Annika was the Western USA manager for Melia International Travel (3rd largest tour company in the world) in the late 70s' and 80's and owned Friendship International Tours (Wholesale spiritual/corporate group travel operating company) until 1994, when it was sold.
Annika became interested in a healthy approach for body, mind and soul for her personal lifestyle and started to promote travel programs that aligned with her philosophy. She formed a joint venture in 1997 with the founders of Health World Online to develop the Healthy Travel concept as part of their web site, Healthy.net as well as NPICenter.com.
Mindbodytravel/Healthquest travel, formed to market niche worldwide educational group travel program, was Annika's next creation in 1998 (sold 2003). Annika has continued to consult in the industry since then...
Annika’s commitment to healthy minds and bodies reflects her similar commitment to a healthy planet. She sees Smart About Carbon as a vehicle to affect mainstream change. With “Carbon Offsets,” she hopes to give both the travel industry and society at large a simple and effective method to neutralize their effect on Global Climate Change.
Richard Hayes is the co-founder of Smart About Carbon. He has always been interested in the outdoors, starting when he was in the boy scouts, and going on camping trips and hikes and learning about many things in nature from trees, to bird watching and animals.
In Los Angeles, Richard owned a floor covering company, and started to look for ways to address the issues of all the carpet and foam padding that was being removed from homes, and disposed of in landfills. He researched and located a new company that was introducing a way to recycle used foam padding, and this led him to work with companies that could offer more environmentally friendly floor coverings.
After the birth of their son, Connor, in 1996, Richard and Annika decided it was time to move out of Los Angeles and to find a place they would more like to raise a child. This led them to the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Mountains in Northern California, where they settled down in the Gold Rush era town of Nevada City.
Richard moved into construction and real estate, fixing up older homes, and building new ones. He continued to search for ways to use energy saving and environmentally friendly materials and designs and has worked with architect David Wright, who has an extensive background designing homes with passive solar and other sustainability features.
In the future, Richard plans to take older homes and make them more sustainable by implementing energy saving, environmentally friendly building materials. He is also very excited about many of the “green” products that are being introduced to the building industry. Right now, green products make up about 10 % of the total $ spent on building materials, but it is expected that that amount will grow significantly in the near future.
Richard says, “it’s very beautiful where we live. I sit on our deck and look out over the mountains and pine trees, but there are a number of days where I can see a brown tint in the air. It’s becoming harder to find blue skies, with pollution drifting over not only from Sacramento and San Francisco, but from China as well. I really want to spend my time doing what I can to help make our planet beautiful for generations to come.”
Eric Lindsay grew up in Portland, OR, where he developed an ethic of working to protect our natural environment.
Eric graduated from Whitman College with a degree in German. Thereafter he worked for the National Park Service as a German Speaking Naturalist. Since then he has worked as a computer consultant for the Sisters of the Holy Names (an order of Catholic nuns) and as a freelance consultant here in Grass Valley, CA.
Eric has had a long-term interest in Green Business and businesses pursuing green goals. So, when the chance to work with Smart About Carbon came along, it didn’t take long for Eric to accept. He looks forward to doing his part to help combat global climate change.
